Grok reacts to claim Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast was AI-generated

Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot owned by Elon Musk’s xAI, has responded to claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2026 Independence Day broadcast was generated using artificial intelligence.

The claim surfaced on social media after Tinubu delivered his Independence Day address on Thursday, October 1, in which he said Nigeria had moved beyond the difficult phase of economic reforms and was entering an era of prosperity. The full text of the address was also published by the State House and other Nigerian media outlets.

An X-based group, iOccupyNigeria, alleged that AI had been used in the production of the broadcast, pointing to what it described as a lack of synchronisation between Tinubu’s lip movements and his words.

However, in response to an X user’s enquiry on Friday, Grok said there were no visible signs indicating that the broadcast was AI-generated.

Grok noted that modern AI-generated videos can be difficult to distinguish from authentic footage and that visual inspection alone may not always provide a definitive answer.

It nevertheless assessed the footage as appearing to be a genuine official recording of Tinubu delivering his Independence Day address from Aso Villa.

According to Grok, the video matched the full speech published by multiple Nigerian media outlets, carried official branding, showed natural movements over nearly 20 minutes and was posted by Tinubu’s verified account on the day of the address.

“No signs of AI generation,” Grok stated in its response.

The AI-related claim has generated reactions online, while the authenticity of the broadcast has not been independently established solely through Grok’s assessment.
